Lesson 2: Microsoft Word 2016 Basic Features
Lesson 1 familiarized you with the the Microsoft Word window. You are now ready to learn how to create a Word document. This lesson covers typing, using the Backspace key, using the Delete key, inserting text, bolding, underlining, and italicizing. To begin, open Microsoft Word.

Typing, Backspace, and Delete
In Microsoft Word, you create documents by typing.
- Text automatically moves to a new line when it reaches the end.
- Press Enter to start a new paragraph. Word inserts a blank line to indicate the start of a paragraph.
- To capitalize letters, hold Shift while typing.
If you make a mistake, you can delete text and type the correction.
- Backspace key: Deletes the character before the cursor
- Delete key: Deletes the selected text

EXERCISE 1: Type and Backspace

Type the sentence:
Joe has a very large house. -
Delete the word "house" using Backspace:
- Place the cursor between the period and the "e" in "house"
- Press Backspace until "house" is deleted

Type
boat. Your sentence should read:Joe has a very large boat.
Delete a Word

Delete the word "very" from the sentence:
- Select "very" (Shift + Arrow keys or mouse drag)
- Press Delete
Your sentence should now read:
Joe has a large boat.
Insert and Overtype Text
Insert Mode
- Used to add text between existing text
- Example: Change
Joe has a large boat.
to
Joe has a large blue boat.
Overtype Mode
- Used to replace existing text
- Example: Change
Joe has a large blue boat.
to
Joe has a large gray boat.
Check or Add Insert/Overtype Button

Right-click the Status Bar

Select Overtype from the Customize Status Bar menu

Click the button to switch modes:
- Insert → Insert mode
- Overtype → Overtype mode

EXERCISE 2: Insert and Overtype
Insert Text
- Make sure you are in Insert mode
- Place the cursor between "large" and "boat"
- Type
blueand press Space - Your sentence should read:
Joe has a large blue boat.
Overtype Text
- Switch to Overtype mode (click "Insert" on Status Bar)
- Place the cursor before "blue"
- Type
gray - Your sentence should read:
Joe has a large gray boat.
Note: You can overtype without changing mode by selecting the text you want to replace and typing.

Bold, Italicize, and Underline
Word allows you to emphasize text using:
- Bold
- Italic
- Underline
You can also combine all three.
There are multiple ways to format text:
- Dialog Box Launcher
- Ribbon buttons
- Mini Toolbar / Context Menu
- Keyboard shortcuts

EXERCISE 3: Formatting Text
Type the following, pressing Enter at the end of each line:
Launcher: Bold Italicize Underline these words. All three Regular
Ribbon: Bold Italicize Underline these words. All three Regular
Mini Toolbar: Bold Italicize Regular
Keys: Bold Italicize Underline these words. All three Regular
Bold Text
Using Dialog Box Launcher
- Select the word "Bold"
- Click Home → Font Dialog Box Launcher
- Click Bold in Font Style
- Click OK
Using Ribbon
- Select "Bold"
- Click the Bold button on Ribbon
Using Mini Toolbar
- Select "Bold"
- Right-click to show Mini Toolbar
- Click Bold
Using Keyboard Shortcut
- Select "Bold"
- Press Ctrl + B

Italicize Text
Using Dialog Box Launcher
- Select the word "Italicize"
- Click Home → Font Dialog Box Launcher
- Click Italic in Font Style
- Click OK
Using Ribbon / Mini Toolbar / Keyboard
- Ribbon: Click Italic
- Mini Toolbar: Right-click → Italic
- Shortcut: Ctrl + I

Underline Text
Using Dialog Box Launcher
- Select the text to underline
- Click Home → Font Dialog Box Launcher
- Choose an underline style in the pull-down
- Click OK
Using Ribbon
- Select text → Click Underline button
- Optionally choose underline style using the dropdown
Using Keyboard Shortcut
- Ctrl + U

Combine All Three

Select text

Apply Bold, Italic, Underline using:
- Dialog Box Launcher
- Ribbon buttons
- Keyboard: Ctrl + B, Ctrl + I, Ctrl + U

Save a File and Close Word
- Use Save in Microsoft Office menu or Ctrl + S
- First-time saving opens Save As dialog
- Specify folder and file name (e.g.,
Lesson Two.docx) - After first save, clicking Save updates the file
EXERCISE 4: Save and Close
Windows 11
- Click Microsoft Office Button → Save
- Choose folder → Type
Lesson Two.docx→ Click Save or Click CTRL + S on your keyboard - Click Microsoft Office Button → Exit Word
Each save overwrites the previous version. To keep multiple versions, use Save As with a new file name.
